Scrape the bottom of the bucket

to choose from what is left over, or to select from among the worst. There is the idea of settling for 2nd best because you have no other options or you may also be desperate in your decision-making.
Man: Wow!     “Talk about…”: to emphasize something, especially when criticizing or complaining, e.g.: “Talk about bad luck!”

1. I have watched so many movies that it’s difficult to find a good movie to rent or download, so these days I’ve been scraping the bottom of the bucket and watching movies that I normally wouldn’t consider. It’s amazing what we will settle for when we are desperate for entertainment or really bored! Recently I watched the movie, “Brokeback Mountain”. Talk about scraping the bottom of the bucket!

2. Don’t you feel sometimes that we’re scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes time to vote for a presidential candidate, mayor or governor? Many times it’s a case of choosing from the least worst. Don’t you ask yourself, “Man, where do they find these people!?”

3. When you buy an air ticket at the last minute, you may have to scrape the bottom of the bucket… you will probably not get the seats of your choice, and may not be able to sit together with your friends or family because you have to accept the seats that are left over. You will likely sit right next to the toilet!

  1. The second example is 110% true. In politics, it's often about scraping the bottom of the candidates barrel when it's come to choose one. Nuff said.

And to augment the third example, I've heard when you're scraping the bottom of the bucket in case you don't have much time till the flight, the tickets are getting more expensive.

  2. Oh, and BTW, Frank, a little annoying user interface inconvenience of the site. It's natural and widespread to have the top logo pointing to the main page, but here it doesn't work, and I can't find an easy and fast way to jump to the front page. You may consider this thing.

  3. @pluton Are you talking about the banner at the top of the page? The image that's right at the top of the blog? I guess I could do that if that's what you're saying... otherwise, you can jump to the "home page"/ front page of the blog by clicking on the little image of the house under the comments section. Let me know...

  4. @Frank, yeah, I'm suggesting that the big banner at the top of the page should point to the main page. Lots of websites has this UI element, which is quite convenient. And the home button below is rather unnoticeable (for me).

  5. @pluton I haven't figured out how to do that yet... I just Googled it... but the coding in my CSS is not like in the tutorials... so I will have to search some more. I would if I could...

  8. If you're late to a concert, you're likely to scrape the bottom of the bucket and get the worst seats.
